“Think of the shape of an actual almond,” nail artist Naomi Yasuda tells Vogue. “The nail is wide at the bottom and gets thinner toward the top, ending in a soft, rounded point.”
It’s the perfect balance for when you want to add length, but don’t want it to feel aggressive, says nail artist Juan Alvear. “It reads like a natural extension of the finger.”
“It is a classic shape because it never goes out of fashion. It looks natural and classy, and it makes everyone’s hands look beautiful,” adds Yasuda.
How do I maintain the health of my long nails?
From natural nails to Gel X manicures and hard gel extensions, there are a few ways to achieve the length this shape requires, but what matters most is preserving the nails’ structural integrity. “It comes down to structure. A proper apex, clean sidewalls, and support through the stress point,” Alvear says, adding that most damage comes from over-filing the nails.
Yasuda agrees, noting that it’s important not to file the sides of the nails too much, otherwise they’ll crack. She also recommends applying a cuticle oil every day, even if you’re not wearing gel polish. “You should always wear a nail strengthener or a few coats of regular polish to give them a protective layer.”
